About This Episode
"Bonus afsnit" ("Bonus Episode") is an extra instalment of Forbrydelsens Anatomi (The Anatomy of Crime), a Danish historical true crime series that examines notorious crimes from the past with the help of historians and other experts. The episode is about poison murder — and about how that particular kind of killing came into fashion after the cases of Anna Helena and Mørch in the Danish town of Kerteminde.
The central question is how the Danish justice system responded once poisoning suddenly began to spread as a phenomenon. The episode builds on material that historian Charlotte Lindhardt uncovered while the series was being recorded: roughly 3,000 pages of documents concerning the murder of the vicar in Kerteminde, held at Rigsarkivet, the Danish National Archives.
In the bonus episode, Charlotte Lindhardt and Camilla Schjerning dig into the questions and unresolved mysteries raised by the podcast "Præstedatterens hemmelighed" ("The Vicar's Daughter's Secret"). They present new information about both Mørch and Anna Helena which, according to the participants, may change how the case as a whole is understood.
Much of the conversation is devoted to the detective work behind the research itself — how the documents were tracked down, read and interpreted, and how archival finds can throw fresh light on a case long after the fact.
