Violence against women is not a distinct criminal-law category under Danish law, but a collective term used socially and in crime journalism for acts of violence committed against women. Danish criminal law criminalises violence regardless of the victim's sex or relationship to the perpetrator, and the relevant provisions apply to all cases of physical and psychological violence. The central provision is the Danish Penal Code (straffeloven) § 244, which criminalises using violence against or otherwise assaulting another person's body. This provision is the starting point in cases of violence against women, whether the violence occurs in an intimate relationship, within the family or between strangers. The seriousness and circumstances of the case determine which other provisions are also applied.

In true crime writing and crime journalism, the term is used broadly for a range of different offence types: intimate partner violence, stalking, deprivation of liberty, sexual offences and homicide. Cases such as the Natascha Kampusch case, the killing of Andreen McDonald and the rape and violence allegations against the son of the Norwegian crown princess are all examples of cases falling within this broad category, even though they are handled legally under very different provisions.

Because the term is not an independent legal category in Denmark, statistics, research and legislative initiatives concerning violence against women typically compile data across several criminal-law provisions. Organisations and authorities use the term as an analytical and political category rather than a legal one. In a crime journalism and true crime context, the term is useful because it directs attention to patterns and structures in the cases covered — including power relations, close relationships and the risk of repetition — rather than merely the individual punishable act.
