About This Episode
What is this episode about?
The episode "Michael Connelly's new podcast: Killer In The Code" introduces a new podcast in which self-styled cold case consultant Alex Baber claims to have solved two of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history: the Black Dahlia case and the Zodiac Killer — Californiens uopklarede seriemorder. With no badge and no formal law enforcement training, Baber spent two years using cryptology, genealogy, reflectography, and traditional investigative legwork to try to identify a suspect who eluded authorities for more than half a century. The episode presents his methods and states that some experts in homicide investigation and code-breaking stand behind his conclusions.
The case behind the episode
The podcast centers on The Zodiac Killer — Unsolved Serial Murder Case, an unidentified serial murderer who killed at least five people in Northern California between 1968 and 1969. The killer became notorious for sending taunting cryptograms to newspapers, a puzzle element that ties directly into Baber's cryptology-based approach in the series. According to the episode, new evidence uncovered during Baber's investigation points toward a single suspect who may have intentionally left behind clues meant to be discovered decades later.
