The 2025 documentary 'For Venida, For Kalief' portrays the tragic story of Kalief Browder and his mother Venida Browder's tireless activism.

Kalief Browder was arrested in 2010 at age 16, accused of stealing a backpack. He pleaded not guilty but could not pay bail. Over the following three years, he was held at the Rikers Island jail in New York, including two years in solitary confinement, while awaiting trial. Browder was subjected to extensive physical and psychological abuse from both fellow inmates and guards.

When the case was finally dropped in 2013, Browder was deeply traumatized. In 2015, he died by suicide at just 22 years old. His death became a catalyst for reform of the American justice system, particularly regarding the pretrial detention of young people and the use of solitary confinement.

After her son's death, Venida Browder became a prominent activist, fighting to change the conditions that cost Kalief his life. She worked tirelessly to close the Rikers Island jail and reform the bail system, until she herself died in 2016.

The film documents this double tragedy and the broader system that allowed it to happen.
