DNA Technology Solves Indiana Serial Killer Case Decades Later

Herbert Baumeister, an Indiana businessman, owned the 18-acre Fox Hollow Farm north of Indianapolis where he murdered at least 13 men—predominantly gay men—during the early-to-mid 1990s. Baumeister was never convicted. He died by suicide in 1996, the same year searchers discovered thousands of bone fragments scattered across his property, potentially belonging to as many as 25 victims.

For decades, the case remained largely unsolved due to technological limitations. When investigators first excavated Fox Hollow Farm in 1996, they recovered over 10,000 bone fragments and bones from approximately 12 individuals. However, lack of adequate DNA funding and technology meant many remains could not be identified. The bones were stored at a university, where they sat with little progress for years.

A renewed investigation launched in 2022, led by Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison, changed everything. Jellison's team collaborated with the University of Indianapolis forensic archaeology lab, Indiana State Police, Othram Inc., and the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification to reanalyze 44 bones and fragments using modern DNA methods—specifically Othram's Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing technology.

The first breakthrough came in 2023 when Allen Livingston was identified through DNA testing at the Indiana State Police Laboratory, after his family prompted the reinvestigation seeking closure. His mother passed away in November 2024, making the identification bittersweet.

In May 2024, Jeffrey A. Jones was identified using Othram technology. Jones, from Fillmore, Indiana, had been reported missing in August 1993. That same month, Daniel Thomas Halloran—an Indiana resident born May 10, 1972—became the 11th victim identified through Othram's technology after the Hamilton County Coroner's Office submitted his remains for analysis.

Roger Goodlet, believed to be Baumeister's first victim, was originally identified in 1996 through dental records and later confirmed via DNA testing. His remains were discovered on the property after a tip from Tony Harris, a friend of Goodlet's, alerted police in 1994.

The discovery of remains accelerated when Julie Baumeister, Herb's wife, granted police permission to search the property in 1996. The investigation intensified further when Baumeister's 13-year-old son found a human skull during exploration of the grounds.

Coroner Jellison continues collecting DNA swabs from families of potential victims to build a comprehensive database for the CODIS system, allowing for cross-matching with the unidentified remains still under analysis. The ongoing investigation represents a significant advancement in cold case resolution, demonstrating how forensic technology can provide closure decades after crimes occur.

The renewed attention to the case received further momentum with the February 2025 premiere of "The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer," a four-part docuseries produced by ABC Studios and released on Hulu. The series features Jellison's investigative efforts, explores new clues regarding potential accomplices, documents changing witness testimony, and addresses missing evidence—shedding light on details that have haunted the case for nearly three decades.

Remains of unidentified victims continue to be analyzed as investigators work toward providing families with answers and closure.
