About This Episode
This episode of the podcast Criminal takes on one of America's most puzzling unsolved murder cases: the Cleveland Torso Murderer, who terrorised Ohio in the 1930s. After his celebrated efforts against Al Capone in Chicago, Eliot Ness was appointed safety director in Cleveland, where he met a very different kind of criminal challenge.
Between 1934 and 1938, at least 12 people were brutally murdered and dismembered, their torsos left in locations around Cleveland. The killer displayed an unsettling precision, and the victims were often difficult to identify. Ness, who had built his reputation on catching seemingly untouchable criminals, threw himself into the case with everything he had.
Despite an extensive investigation and Ness's own dedication, the killer was never officially identified, although there were suspects. The case illustrates the contrast between Ness's earlier successes against organised crime and the difficulty of hunting an intelligent serial murderer who left little to work with.
The Criminal episode looks not only at the murders themselves, but also at the pressure and frustration that shaped the investigation during one of the darkest chapters in Cleveland's history.
