About This Episode
What is this episode about?
The episode "Did Lizzie Borden Get Away with Murder?" from True Crime Society covers the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, and the enduring question of whether their daughter Lizzie was responsible. Alongside a Leila Cavett case update earlier in the episode, the hosts turn their attention to the Borden killings starting around the 16:30 mark.
The case behind the episode
On August 4, 1892, Andrew Borden, a wealthy businessman, was found hacked to death on the sitting-room sofa in his home, while his wife Abby was discovered upstairs, having suffered multiple blows to the head. Suspicion quickly centered on Andrew's 32-year-old daughter Lizzie Borden, who lived in the house with her father and stepmother and reportedly had a strained relationship with Abby amid rising family tensions over finances and property. Lizzie was arrested and charged with both murders, accused of wielding an axe against her father and stepmother. Prosecutors built a circumstantial case against her, but after a highly publicized trial, the jury deliberated for just over an hour before returning a not guilty verdict on both counts. More than 130 years later, the Borden murders remain one of America's most enduring unsolved mysteries, a case explored in depth in Lizzie Borden: Frikendt for øksemord på far og stedmor and further detailed in Lizzie Borden: Acquitted of Axe Murders That Shocked America.
