On December 20, 1968, seventeen-year-old David Arthur Farraday and sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen were shot and killed on Lake Herman Road in Vallejo, California. Their deaths marked the beginning of a reign of terror that would captivate America and define the Bay Area's darkest chapter.

Three months later, the killer struck again. On March 13, 1969, twenty-two-year-old Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin was murdered, and her companion Michael Mageau was shot and wounded. Mageau became one of only two known survivors of the Zodiac's attacks.

The pattern continued through the summer of 1969. In September, the killer targeted Cecelia Ann Shepard, twenty-two, and Bryan Hartnell at a lakeside location in unincorporated Napa County. Shepard was killed; Hartnell survived. The final confirmed victim was Paul Lee Stine, a twenty-nine-year-old taxi driver murdered in San Francisco in October 1969.

The killer's intellectual games extended beyond words. He enclosed four cryptograms with his letters, challenging the public to decode them. The 340 Cipher, however, remained one of America's most famous unsolved codes for fifty-one years, until cryptographers finally decrypted it in 2020. Two additional cryptograms from the Zodiac remain unsolved to this day.

In one 1974 letter, the Zodiac claimed responsibility for thirty-seven murders—far exceeding the five confirmed killings. These additional claims have never been verified, leaving investigators uncertain whether the killer was exaggerating or whether the true death toll was substantially higher.

Despite extensive investigations, fingerprint analysis, and countless tips over decades, law enforcement never identified or apprehended the Zodiac. The case eventually went cold. The last confirmed communication from the killer arrived in 1974, and no verified Zodiac murders have been documented since October 1969.

The Zodiac's legend has only grown with time. In 1971, filmmaker David Fincher drew inspiration from the case for the thriller "Dirty Harry," starring Clint Eastwood. Three decades later, Fincher returned to the subject with 2007's "Zodiac," a meticulous procedural examining the investigation itself.

Today, more than fifty years after the final confirmed murder, the Zodiac Killer remains one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries. Somewhere, the killer—now likely deceased—took his secrets to the grave.
