On January 1, 1990, 23-year-old Hanne With was killed in her apartment on Fensmarkgade 39 in the Nørrebro neighborhood of Copenhagen. She died as a result of multiple stab wounds, blows, kicks, and strangulation — a killing that would remain unsolved for more than three decades.
The case became one of Copenhagen's most enduring unsolved mysteries.
Arrest After 34 Years
On February 6, 2024, the case finally broke open. Henrik Krogh Rasmussen, who was 52 years old at the time of his arrest, was detained and charged with the murder.
The cold case had been investigated for decades, but advances in forensic technology ultimately made the difference. Among the key evidence were DNA evidence and a footprint found at the crime scene — clues that had been preserved but could not be fully utilized until technology had advanced far enough to establish Rasmussen's connection to the killing.
Convicted and Sentenced
In July 2024, Rasmussen was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to 11 years and 6 months in prison. The conviction rested on the technical evidence that investigators were able to present in court.
The case is a striking example of how forensic breakthroughs can eventually bring justice in cases that once seemed impossible to solve.
