Real Crime: The Disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh
ITV's documentary series examines one of Britain's most talked-about missing persons cases
Real Crime, the documentary series broadcast on ITV, turned its attention in 2001 to one of Britain's most widely discussed missing persons cases: that of Suzy Lamplugh, the 25-year-old estate agent who disappeared on 28 July 1986 after going to meet a client recorded in her diary as 'Mr Kipper' in Fulham, London.
The programme works through the missing pieces of a case in which Suzy was never found and in which the police investigation ran into one dead end after another. Her car was found parked close to where the appointment was due to take place, but there was no sign of what had happened to her. Although Suzy was declared legally dead in 1993, the case has never been solved.
The Real Crime documentary examines the various theories about her disappearance and sets out the many leads detectives have pursued over the years, including possible links to known criminals. John Cannan, a convicted murderer and rapist, has long been the main suspect in the case.
The film also looks at the sustained efforts of Suzy's family, and in particular her mother, Diana Lamplugh, who fought to keep the case in the public eye. The result is a thorough account of an investigation that continues to fascinate and frustrate detectives and the public alike.
