Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old White Minneapolis police officer, was convicted on April 20, 2021, of murdering George Floyd, becoming the first White Minnesota police officer ever convicted of murdering a Black person.

Floyd, 46, was arrested on May 25, 2020, after allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a convenience store. During the arrest, Chauvin kneeled on Floyd's neck for approximately 8 minutes and 30 seconds while Floyd lay handcuffed and face-down on the pavement. Throughout the restraint, Floyd repeatedly told officers he could not breathe.

## State Conviction and Sentence

George Floyd dies during arrest

Derek Chauvin presses his knee down on George Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd lies handcuffed and face down. Floyd repeatedly says "I can't breathe" and loses consciousness around 8:25 am with no pulse. Three other officers assist in the arrest.

All four officers fired

The day after the video of the arrest was made public, all four police officers involved were fired from the Minneapolis police department.

20 April 2021

Chauvin found guilty on all charges

A jury in Hennepin County found Derek Chauvin guilty on all three charges: second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

25 June 2021

Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years in prison

Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22 years and 6 months in prison. The judge found that Chauvin had treated Floyd "with particular cruelty". Minneapolis paid 27 million dollars in compensation to Floyd's family.

24 February 2022

Three remaining officers convicted federally

A federal jury in St. Paul found Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane guilty of federal civil rights violations related to Floyd's death, including failure to intervene and provide medical assistance.

On April 20, 2021, a jury found Chauvin guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. On June 25, 2021, he was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison on the state charges.

## Federal Civil Rights Conviction

Chauvin also faced federal charges for willfully violating Floyd's constitutional rights through the use of excessive force during the arrest. He pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to 21 years in federal prison. This sentence was ordered to run concurrently with his state sentence, meaning no additional time was added to his total imprisonment.

## Other Officers Convicted

Three other officers present at the scene were also held accountable. Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao were all convicted of failing to intervene or provide aid during the incident.

Thomas Lane admitted in his plea that he knew the restraint posed a risk of death, heard Floyd say he could not breathe, and was aware of Floyd's deteriorating condition. He was sentenced to 3 years in state prison on September 21, 2022, and was released on August 20, 2024, after completing his sentence.

Kueng and Thao were also convicted on federal charges of willfully failing to provide medical care after Floyd lost a pulse. Kueng was additionally found guilty of failing to intervene against Chauvin's unreasonable use of force, as was Thao.

All four officers were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department.

## Civil Settlement

Beyond criminal proceedings, the City of Minneapolis agreed on March 12, 2021, to pay George Floyd's family US$27 million in a wrongful death lawsuit settlement, one of the largest settlements of its kind.

## Global Impact

The incident sparked massive protests across the United States and worldwide, bringing renewed attention to questions of racial inequality and police accountability in the criminal justice system.
