Tracing the Zodiac Killer's Bay Area Crime Spree

## The First Attack: Lake Herman Road

The Zodiac's confirmed killing spree began on December 20, 1968, on a remote stretch of Lake Herman Road in Benicia. ## The San Francisco Murder

The Zodiac's final confirmed killing occurred on October 11, 1969, in the Presidio Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. Paul Stine, a 29-year-old taxi driver, was shot in the head. This murder was particularly significant because it brought the killer into San Francisco proper and produced physical evidence—including bloody fingerprints reportedly found at the scene—that would later become central to investigative efforts.

## Cryptic Communications and Claims

What set the Zodiac apart from other serial killers was his compulsion to communicate with authorities and the media. He sent letters to major Bay Area newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner, often accompanied by cryptograms. Of the four cryptograms he sent, two have been decrypted—one in 1969 and another as recently as 2020—while two remain unsolved to this day.

The killer's final confirmed letter arrived on January 29, 1974, in which he claimed responsibility for 37 total murders. Whether this claim was accurate or a taunt remains unknown. In his communications, the Zodiac boasted of covering his fingertips with glue to avoid leaving prints, demonstrating both his awareness of investigative techniques and his desire to stay ahead of law enforcement.
