When the police finally searched Dutroux's property in August 1996, they found the surviving girls Sabine Dardenne and Laetitia Delhez in a hidden basement room. However, the discovery of the survivors was overshadowed by the tragic finding of the bodies of Julie, Mélissa, An, and Eefje, who had been buried on Dutroux's properties. The case triggered a national crisis in Belgium when it became clear that the police and judiciary had made several mistakes and that Dutroux had previously been released early for similar crimes.
