What is the episode about?
Mørkeland episode 342 is the second part of an extensive special series about the Belgian serial killer and pedophile Marc Dutroux, who shook all of Europe in the mid-1990s. While the first part introduced the beginning of the case, this episode focuses on the systematic kidnappings, the roles of the accomplices, and the horrifying time the victims spent in captivity. The hosts map out how Marc Dutroux did not operate alone, but was supported by his wife Michelle Martin and accomplice Michel Lelièvre in the abduction of girls such as Julie Lejeune, Melissa Russo, An Marchal, and Eefje Lambrecks. The episode highlights the darkest aspects of the Belgian cellars where children were kept hidden under conditions that later led to massive public protests against the Belgian justice system.
The case behind the episode
The case of Marc Dutroux is considered one of the biggest judicial scandals in European history. In 1995 and 1996, several young girls disappeared without a trace in Belgium, triggering one of the most extensive investigations in the country. When the police finally searched Marc Dutroux's property in Marcinelle, they found two surviving girls, Sabine Dardenne and Laetitia Delhez, locked in a secret cell behind a bookshelf in the basement. Unfortunately, help came too late for other victims. Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo died of starvation and neglect in the basement while Marc Dutroux was in custody for car theft, all while his wife Michelle Martin failed to provide the girls with food. An Marchal and Eefje Lambrecks were later found murdered and buried on one of Marc Dutroux's properties. The case revealed deep incompetence and corruption within the Belgian police and gendarmerie, culminating in 'The White March' in Brussels, where 300,000 people demonstrated for justice.
