What is the episode about?
Natascha Kampusch became the subject of one of Europe's most shocking criminal cases when, on March 2, 1998, she was pulled into a white van by Wolfgang Priklopil on her way to school in Vienna. In this special episode of Mørkeland hosts Camilla and Kristine dive into the 3,096 days Natascha Kampusch spent in captivity and the complex aftermath that followed her dramatic escape in August 2006. The episode particularly focuses on the concept of the imperfect victim and how the public reacted to a young woman who did not fit the classic narrative of a broken victim.
The case behind the episode
The case of Natascha Kampusch shook Austria and the rest of the world when it emerged that she had been held captive in a soundproof basement beneath Wolfgang Priklopil's house in Strasshof an der Nordbahn. For eight and a half years, she was subjected to physical and psychological violence, hunger, and isolation. Wolfgang Priklopil managed to hide his crime from neighbors and authorities until Natascha Kampusch took advantage of a moment of inattention while he was vacuuming his car to escape on August 23, 2006. Shortly after her escape, Wolfgang Priklopil committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train, leaving many unanswered questions in the case.
