Episode 342 of the Danish true crime podcast Mørkeland — released on 17 March 2026 — is the second instalment of an in-depth special series on Belgian serial killer and paedophile Marc Dutroux, whose crimes in the mid-1990s shook all of Europe. While the first episode introduced the origins of the case, this episode focuses on the systematic abductions, the roles of Dutroux's accomplices, and the terrifying time his victims spent in captivity.

What the episode covers

The hosts map out how Marc Dutroux did not act alone. He was supported by his wife Michelle Martin and accomplice Michel Lelièvre in the abductions of girls including Julie Lejeune, Melissa Russo, An Marchal and Eefje Lambrecks. The episode shines a light on the darkest aspects of the Belgian cellar rooms where the children were held hidden — conditions that would later trigger massive public protests against the Belgian justice system.

The case behind the episode

The Marc Dutroux case is regarded as one of the greatest judicial scandals in European history. During 1995 and 1996, several young girls vanished without trace in Belgium, triggering one of the most extensive investigations the country had ever seen. When police finally searched Dutroux's property in Marcinelle, they found two surviving girls — Sabine Dardenne and Laetitia Delhez — imprisoned in a secret cell hidden behind a bookcase in the cellar.

For other victims, help came too late. Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo died of starvation and neglect in the cellar while Marc Dutroux was remanded in custody on charges of car theft — during which time his wife Michelle Martin failed to feed the girls. An Marchal and Eefje Lambrecks were later found murdered and buried on one of Dutroux's properties.

The case exposed deep incompetence and corruption within the Belgian police and gendarmerie, ultimately culminating in the so-called White March in Brussels, where 300,000 people took to the streets to demand justice.

The sentences

Marc Dutroux was sentenced to life imprisonment (perpétuité) for five murders, abductions, unlawful imprisonment, rape with torture, and drug trafficking. He is eligible to apply for parole after 15 years. His wife Michelle Martin received a 30-year sentence for criminal detention. Accomplice Michel Lelièvre was sentenced to 25 years, and Jean-Michel Nihoul received a 5-year sentence for human trafficking and drug offences.
