Netflix Documentary Revisits the Mysterious Deaths of the Carman Family
En overlevelse til søs, et dræbt familiemedlem og en føderal tiltale — nu fortalt i 'The Carman Family Deaths'
Netflix has added a new true crime documentary to its lineup: 'The Carman Family Deaths' retells the story of Nathan Carman from New England — a man who found himself at the center of two family members' tragic ends and later faced federal fraud charges. The case has everything from a brutal shooting death inside a wealthy Connecticut suburban home to a desperate rescue in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
A grandfather murdered in his own home
On December 20, 2013, John Chakalos was found shot dead inside his home in Windsor, Connecticut. Chakalos was a wealthy man, and his death sent shockwaves through the family. The Connecticut State Police opened an investigation, but according to publicly available sources, no one has ever been prosecuted and convicted for his murder.
His grandson, Nathan Carman, quickly came under scrutiny from authorities — not least because Chakalos' death had a direct bearing on a potential inheritance that Nathan Carman was allegedly set to receive. Exactly what happened on that December night in Connecticut has never been definitively resolved by the courts.
A dramatic rescue at sea
Three years after his grandfather's death, another tragic event struck the Carman family. On September 17, 2016, Nathan Carman and his mother, Linda Carman, set out from the coast near Block Island, Rhode Island, aboard Nathan's boat named Chicken Pox. The boat ran into trouble at sea, and Nathan Carman ended up being rescued by a cargo ship — alone.
Linda Carman was never found alive and was subsequently declared drowned. The rescue operation, carried out by the United States Coast Guard, immediately raised questions: what had actually happened aboard the Chicken Pox? Had the boat suffered a structural failure, or was something more sinister at play? Nathan Carman maintained that it was an accident and that he was lucky to have survived. But authorities were not convinced.
Federal fraud charges
In June 2023 — nearly seven years after Linda Carman's disappearance and almost ten years after John Chakalos' death — federal prosecutors in Vermont made a significant move. Nathan Carman was indicted on charges of wire fraud and other federal offenses. According to the indictment, he had unlawfully received money connected to his grandfather's death and subsequent insurance and estate payouts.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment and alleged that Carman had manipulated financial flows tied to both family deaths. It was not a murder charge — but a fraud charge with direct links to the two deaths.
The legal proceedings never reached their conclusion. On June 15, 2023 — just days after the indictment — Nathan Carman died in federal custody at the Federal Medical Center, Devens, Massachusetts. He was never convicted.
A dysfunctional New England family under scrutiny
The Netflix documentary 'The Carman Family Deaths' delves into the broader familial and financial context surrounding the cases. The series explores how money, inheritance, and family dysfunction within an outwardly affluent New England family can provide the backdrop for deaths that leave questions unanswered.
The case is notable for several reasons: two family members died under dramatic circumstances, the primary suspect was never held accountable in a court of law, and the investigation spanned three American states and the federal district of Vermont.
With the arrival of the Netflix documentary, the case will now be reexamined for a global audience — and the question of what truly happened to John Chakalos and Linda Carman remains unanswered.
