About the book

FormatBook

This true crime book delves into one of the most spectacular prison escapes in modern American history. In December 2000, seven inmates - known as the Texas Seven - managed to break out of the Connally Unit prison in Texas through a meticulously planned operation.

The escape turned to tragedy when, on December 24, 2000, the group murdered police officer Aubrey Hawkins during a robbery at a sporting goods store in Irving, Texas. The brutal killing triggered a massive manhunt spanning several states, involving the FBI and countless police units.

The book follows the entire course of events - from the carefully planned escape, in which the seven men overpowered prison guards and staff, to their eventual capture. Six of the men were apprehended in Woodland Park, Colorado, after a tip from the TV show "America's Most Wanted," while the seventh took his own life during the arrest.

Through extensive research and interviews, the author portrays the human toll of the crimes - particularly on Officer Hawkins' family - as well as the legal proceedings that followed. The book sheds light on both the systemic failures that made the escape possible and the long road back to justice for the victims' loved ones.
