Death in Ice Valley: The Mystery of the Isdal Woman

Death in Ice Valley is an investigative true crime podcast that reopens one of Norway's most baffling unsolved cases: the death of an unidentified woman found severely burned in Isdalen, a valley near Bergen, in 1970. It is hosted by award-winning journalists Marit Higraff of Norwegian broadcaster NRK and Neil McCarthy of the BBC.

The series combines painstaking archival research, expert analysis, witness testimony and cutting-edge forensic science in an effort to piece together the woman's identity and the circumstances surrounding her mysterious death. Rather than simply retelling the case, the hosts put old evidence through new scientific methods and follow where the results lead.

Across 14 episodes, Higraff and McCarthy guide listeners through decades-old leads and competing theories, examining everything from Cold War intrigue to the possibility of a private, personal tragedy. The podcast also invites listeners to take part in the investigation, drawing them into the search for answers while asking a question that sits at the heart of the case: how could a woman vanish so completely that no one ever came forward to identify her?

A co-production between the BBC World Service and NRK, Death in Ice Valley stands out for its thorough journalism and cross-border collaboration, shedding new light on a case that has haunted Norwegian authorities and true crime enthusiasts for more than 50 years.
