Shot in the Heart

Mikal Gilmore, a Rolling Stone journalist, reckons with his brother Gary Gilmore, the double murderer executed in Utah in 1977, and the deeply violent, haunted family that produced them both. The memoir excavates cycles of abuse, buried secrets and inherited trauma in a quest to understand how a household shaped by cruelty could breed a killer.
