American Fire

Monica Hesse investigates the spree of more than sixty arsons that terrorised rural Accomack County, Virginia, over several winter months, ultimately traced to a troubled local couple. The book masterfully blends suspenseful crime narrative with a nuanced portrait of post-industrial economic decline, small-town identity and a relationship that curdled into something dangerously destructive.
