The Fight for Pusher Street on HBO Max: The Story Behind the Eviction of Christiania
Documentary series about the gang war between Loyal to Familia and the final closure of Pusher Street
What is the series about?
The Fight for Pusher Street on HBO Max is a documentary series that, through unique interviews and archival material, charts the transformation of Christiania's famous hash street from a sanctuary to a violent war zone. The first episode, 'Pusher Street Arises', focuses on the crucial years of 2023 and 2024, when organized gang crime took control of the area. The series gives voice to both police officers, residents, and the criminal actors who were at the center of the conflict that led to the street's final closure.
The real case
The real case behind the documentary centers on the escalating violence in Copenhagen, where the gang Loyal to Familia (LTF) attempted to seize power over the lucrative hash market in Pusher Street. In August 2023, tensions culminated in a brutal shooting, where masked perpetrators fired shots into a crowd, marking a definitive turning point for the free town. Copenhagen Police and the Ministry of Justice subsequently intensified efforts against the organized groups, resulting in the historic decision to dig up the cobblestones and permanently remove the stalls in April 2024.
Timeline of the case
The conflict in Pusher Street has roots going back several decades, but the escalation in 2023 was unprecedented. Following the murder in August 2023, authorities implemented search zones and increased video surveillance in the area. In the spring of 2024, the residents of Christiania made a historic choice by requesting the authorities' help to completely eliminate the organized trade. This process is the focal point of the series' depiction of how the community and the state responded to the threat from the gangs.
Watch the series
The series can be streamed on HBO Max from October 10, 2025. As part of the launch, a pop-up exhibition has been created at the Copenhagen Museum, where visitors can see a detailed 3D model of Pusher Street, which was used during production to reconstruct the tactical police efforts and crime scenes.
