In the summer of 1969, Charles Manson's followers carried out a series of murders across Los Angeles that shocked the world and permanently scarred the city's landscape. Today, Grave Line Tours offers a three-hour journey through those same neighbourhoods, transporting a small group of passengers in a funeral limousine to the locations where Hollywood's darkest chapter unfolded.

The History Behind the Locations

The Manson Family murders of August 1969 were not random. The victims and locations were chosen with specific intent — a fact that makes the geography of the crimes particularly significant.

Jay Sebring, one of the five victims killed at the Tate residence, was a prominent Hollywood hairstylist whose salon stood at 725 N Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. Sebring counted among his clients some of the biggest names in 1960s entertainment culture. His murder, alongside Sharon Tate and three others at 10050 Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, on the night of August 8–9, 1969, remains one of the most documented homicides in American criminal history.

The following night, Manson Family members killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca at their home in Los Feliz — a residential neighbourhood that, to this day, carries the quiet unease of that history. The LaBianca house on Waverly Drive was selected in part because Manson himself had attended a party at a neighbouring property.

Chatsworth, in the far northwestern reaches of the San Fernando Valley, was where the Manson Family was based — operating out of the Spahn Movie Ranch, a former film location that served as their commune. Law enforcement raided the ranch in August 1969, and again in October of the same year, ultimately leading to the arrests that would result in the landmark 1970–71 trial.

These are not abstract historical points. They are physical locations embedded in a living city, and the tour frames them within the broader social context of late-1960s Los Angeles: the counterculture, the entertainment industry, and the law enforcement failures that allowed the Family to operate for as long as they did.
