The case behind the episode
The case of Josef Fritzl began in August 1984, when he lured his then 18-year-old daughter down into a hidden cellar beneath the family home. Here, she was sedated and chained. Over the next two decades, he repeatedly raped her, resulting in the birth of seven children. Three of the children grew up in the cellar with their mother without ever seeing daylight, while three others were adopted by Josef Fritzl and his unsuspecting wife, Rosemarie, under the pretense that Elisabeth had run away and left them on the doorstep. One child died shortly after birth in the cellar, after which Fritzl burned the body in a boiler room.
The revelation took place in April 2008, when the oldest child in the cellar became seriously ill and had to be hospitalized. The doctors became suspicious when they could not find the mother, leading the police to reopen the investigation into the missing daughter. During the confrontation, Elisabeth managed to tell the truth to the police under the promise that she would never see her father again. Josef Fritzl was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for negligent homicide, rape, incest, confinement, and slavery.
