The episode focuses on the 24 years during which Fritzl kept his daughter, Elisabeth Fritzl, imprisoned in a specially built cellar beneath the family's home in Amstetten, Austria. Through a detailed examination of the case files, the podcast sheds light on how the perpetrator managed to conceal his crime from the outside world and his own family from 1984 until the revelation in 2008. Special emphasis is placed on the systematic abuse and extreme control that characterized Elisabeth's life in captivity, where she gave birth to a total of seven children as a result of her father's repeated rapes.
The case behind the episode
The case of Josef Fritzl came to public attention on April 26, 2008, when Elisabeth Fritzl was allowed to leave the cellar for the first time in over two decades to visit her eldest child in the hospital. Josef Fritzl had lured his then 18-year-old daughter down into the cellar in 1984 under the pretense of helping to carry a door, after which he anesthetized and shackled her. For the next 24 years, Elisabeth lived underground without access to daylight. Three of the children grew up with Josef Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie, after Fritzl staged it as if Elisabeth had run away and left the infants on the doorstep. The remaining children stayed in the cellar with their mother. At the trial in 2009, Josef Fritzl was found guilty of negligent homicide, rape, incest, imprisonment, and slavery, resulting in a life sentence. This first part of the podcast's special series primarily focuses on the construction of the cellar and the early years of the imprisonment.
