Netflix Doc Examines Murder of Pro Cyclist Moriah Wilson
Marina Zenovich's new documentary explores the case of 25-year-old cyclist killed in Austin, the conviction of Kaitlin Armstrong, and the family's fight for justice
Professional cyclist Moriah "Mo" Wilson, 25, was found fatally shot in a friend's apartment in Austin, Texas on May 11, 2022. Now, nearly four years after her death, Netflix's new documentary 'The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson' tells the story of her life, her murder, and the legal battle that followed.
The film, directed by acclaimed documentarian Marina Zenovich and released on April 3, 2026, draws from a 2022 feature story published in *Bicycling* magazine and combines home videos with new interviews featuring Wilson's parents Eric and Karen, and her brother Matt. The documentary examines not only the circumstances of Wilson's death but also its profound impact on her family, friends, and the professional cycling community.
According to the documentary's investigation, Kaitlin Armstrong, 38 at the time of sentencing, was convicted as an apparent romantic rival in the case. Armstrong was found guilty of first-degree murder in November 2023 and sentenced to 90 years in prison. Court records indicate that cyclist Colin Strickland was the last person to see Wilson alive before her death.
The Wilson family's pursuit of justice extended beyond the criminal conviction. In June 2024, Judge Daniella DeSata Lyttle ruled in favor of Eric and Karen Wilson in their wrongful death lawsuit against Armstrong, ordering her to pay $15 million in damages—$5 million each to Eric and Karen for mental anguish they suffered as a result of their daughter's death.
Beyond the legal proceedings, the Wilson family has channeled their grief into meaningful action. They established a charity organization in Moriah's honor, transforming their loss into a legacy that continues her impact on the cycling community and beyond.
