California Woman Sentenced to 25 Years for Murdering Stepfather
Jade Janks convicted of killing Tom Merriman after discovering collection of her nude photographs
Quick Facts
Jade Janks, a 39-year-old interior designer from Solana Beach, California, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of her stepfather, Tom Merriman. A San Diego County jury convicted her in December 2022 after just one day of deliberations. Janks will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years.
Merriman, a 64-year-old butterfly conservationist, was killed on December 31, 2020. His body was discovered three days later on January 2, 2021, hidden beneath a pile of trash on the driveway. Prosecutors established that Janks had drugged him with a lethal combination of sleeping pills and painkillers before strangling him.
The motive centered on a deeply disturbing discovery. While using Merriman's computer, Janks found hundreds of nude photographs of herself meticulously organized by body part. Some of the images dated back to when she was just 16 years old. Prosecutors argued this discovery demonstrated clear premeditation for the crime.
Janks' own text messages, sent on the day of the killing, provided damning evidence of her intent. "I just dosed the hell out of him," she wrote, followed shortly by "It's pretty much done." Later messages revealed her struggle with the logistics of her plan: "I can't keep a kicking body in my truck. I'm about to club him on the head and he is waking up."
During the trial, Janks' defense team attempted to present an alternative narrative. They claimed Merriman had subjected her to abuse and portrayed him as an alcoholic who mixed liquor with sleeping pills. When describing her discovery of the photographs, Janks characterized the experience as "violating, awful, gut-wrenching." Despite these arguments, the jury found the evidence of premeditation and deliberate murder overwhelming.
