Doctor Charged with 15 Patient Murders in Berlin
A 40-year-old palliative care physician stands accused of systematically killing at least 15 patients between 2021 and 2024
Quick Facts
A 40-year-old palliative care physician from Berlin appeared in court in July 2025, accused of murdering at least 15 of his patients between September 2021 and July 2024. Dr. Johannes M. allegedly injected patients with sedatives followed by muscle relaxants without their knowledge or consent, resulting in fatal respiratory failure.
If the accusations are proven, Dr. M. would rank among Germany's most prolific serial killers.
Systematic Exploitation of Vulnerable Patients
Prosecutors believe Dr. M. deliberately targeted his palliative care patients for murder. The victims were seriously ill individuals who trusted him and depended on his medical care. Instead of alleviating their suffering, he allegedly administered lethal drug combinations.
In at least five cases, the physician allegedly set fires in victims' apartments to conceal evidence. The fires were apparently intended to obscure the cause of death and hinder the investigation. In total, 395 deaths from the doctor's practice area were reviewed, with 71 classified as suspicious and requiring further investigation.
Wiretaps Exposed the Crimes
The breakthrough came through wiretapped phone conversations. According to trial documents, Dr. M. openly discussed his murders in private calls—showing no remorse or doubt. Colleagues describe the palliative care physician as dedicated, popular, and self-assured. No one in his workplace appears to have harbored suspicion.
