About This Episode
What is this episode about?
The episode "The New Monsters: The Loveland Frogman - Part Three" concludes a three-part investigation into the Ohio legend, tracing how the creature endured from a 1955 sighting of humanoid figures beside a road, through a 1972 police encounter, to the summer of 2016, when two teenagers playing Pokémon Go near the Little Miami River claimed to capture ambiguous footage of the creature. Former Loveland police officer Mark Mathews, who shot the animal linked to the 1972 encounter, has said it was a large, tailless iguana, likely an escaped or abandoned pet — an explanation that should have ended the legend but didn't. The episode examines how The Loveland Frogman survived exposure and evidence, becoming a hometown mascot, a merchandise brand and a piece of local identity, and brings the wider The New Monsters series full circle, having also covered alligators beneath Manhattan and the Bunny Man of Northern Virginia.
