In August 2019, a young Danish man with no medical education or qualifications walked into Hvidovre Hospital, put on a white coat, and began seeing patients. He posed as a medical student and, over the course of roughly a month, moved freely between departments — writing patient notes, conducting medical assessments, and prescribing prescription medication. One of his patients was a six-month-old girl, to whom he issued a prescription without any licensed doctor having examined the child. He was convicted in 2022.
The case that shook Danish healthcare
The case became a major scandal in Denmark, exposing serious hospital security failures that allowed an unauthorized individual to operate unchecked within a clinical environment. According to documents obtained through freedom of information requests, the man was not merely a passive observer — he actively participated in patient care in a way that put lives at risk.
The incident involving the infant was considered particularly serious, as it represented a direct breach of patient safety: a prescription was issued for a very young child without any qualified medical professional being involved.
What drove him?
Criminal psychologist Charlotte Kappel, who co-hosts the podcast Bedraget – Den falske læge (Deceived: The Fake Doctor), argues that cases like this are rarely motivated by financial gain. Instead, she suggests that identity fraud of this nature is typically driven by a need for status and recognition — a desire to be seen as someone of authority and expertise.
Journalist Camilla Pedersen and Kappel examine both the psychological profile of the perpetrator and the systemic failures that made the deception possible. Their central question is not just how he did it, but why the hospital's safeguards were insufficient to stop him.
