Time: The Kalief Browder Story
The documentary series follows the tragic case of Kalief Browder, a teenager from the Bronx who was arrested in 2010 for allegedly stealing a backpack. Browder denied the crime, but because his family could not afford the $3,000 bail, he was sent to the notorious Rikers Island jail.
For three years, Browder waited for a trial that never came. During that time, he was subjected to violence from both guards and fellow inmates, and he spent roughly two years in solitary confinement. Despite repeated offers to go free if he pleaded guilty, Browder maintained his innocence.
When the charges were finally dropped in 2013, Browder was deeply traumatized. He took his own life in 2016, at just 22 years old.
Produced by rapper and activist Jay-Z, the series explores the systemic failures of the American justice system, including cash bail, the overuse of solitary confinement, and the inhumane conditions at Rikers Island. Through interviews with family, friends, and legal experts, the documentary paints a harrowing portrait of how the system fails its most vulnerable.
Kalief Browder's case became a symbol of the urgent need for criminal justice reform in the United States.
