Spotlight: How Boston Globe Reporters Exposed Church Abuse
Spotlight tells the story of the Boston Globe's investigative journalism team, which in 2001 uncovered a massive pattern of sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests against children in the Boston area. The film follows the journalists as they systematically map out how the Catholic Church had, for decades, covered up the abuse by shuffling guilty priests between parishes.
Director Tom McCarthy portrays the meticulous detective work the journalists carry out to document the cases. Through interviews with victims, reviews of church documents, and sheer persistence, the Spotlight team uncovers that it isn't just individual priests who have failed the children, but an entire system. Church leadership deliberately concealed the abuse from the public and the authorities.
The film won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2016 and has been praised for its sober, fact-based approach to a sensitive subject. Spotlight works both as a true crime documentary and as a portrait of investigative journalism in practice. It shows how thorough research and the courage to challenge powerful institutions can bring dark truths to light and give victims a voice.
