Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart
The documentary series follows the shocking case of Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped from her bedroom in Salt Lake City on the night of June 5, 2002. The then 14-year-old girl was held captive for nine months by self-proclaimed prophet Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee.
The series offers insight into the massive search effort, which involved police, the FBI and thousands of volunteers. Elizabeth was kept hidden in camps in the mountains around Salt Lake City and later moved around California, veiled and kept close to her kidnapper at all times.
Through interviews with Elizabeth Smart herself, her family and investigators, the series tells the story of the psychological manipulation and unimaginable circumstances that prevented her from escaping. It culminates in the dramatic rescue on March 12, 2003, when Elizabeth was recognized on a street in Sandy, Utah.
Brian David Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison in 2011 for kidnapping and sexual assault. Elizabeth Smart has since used her story to help other victims and now works as an advocate for children's rights.
