The Amager Man: Denmark's Serial Predator and Justice System Failures
How Marcel Lychau Hansen evaded capture for 23 years while committing murders and rapes across Copenhagen
On December 22, 2011, a Copenhagen jury convicted Marcel Lychau Hansen—the Amager Man—of two murders. It was a verdict that should have come far earlier.
Born October 2, 1965, Hansen operated as a predator across Copenhagen's Amager island for 23 years, from February 1987 until his arrest in 2010. His crimes spanned the full spectrum of violent sexual assault: six rapes, including a horrific quadruple rape in 1995, and at least two murders. Yet the Danish justice system repeatedly failed to connect the dots.
## The Lost Decade: The Lene Rasmussen Murder
In September 1990, 26-year-old Lene Rasmussen vanished. Her body was discovered in Fasanskoven forest after an intensive search involving helicopters and cadaver dogs. Her bicycle was found days later on September 3. Police investigated but ultimately failed to link the crime to Hansen until 2010—20 years after her death.
The delay was systemic. DNA technology existed in 1990, but the case went cold, and when Hansen's DNA profile was finally entered into databases two decades later, the match to Rasmussen's case was nearly automatic.
## The 1995 Quadruple Rape: Evidence Lost in Time
On October 19, 1995, Hansen invaded an Amager villa and raped four girls and women in a single night: two aged 14, one 15, and one 23. He stole silver and jewelry worth 65,000 kroner and withdrew 2,000 kroner using a stolen Dankort card. He left behind rope and a knife. Crucially, he left behind stolen jewelry—evidence that would surface 16 years later in the hands of his elder son.
The investigation recovered the stolen items in 2011, but by then, nearly two decades had elapsed. Evidence storage procedures and case management systems had allowed critical physical evidence to remain disconnected from Hansen's DNA profile.
## The 2005 Breakthrough That Came Too Late
It wasn't until May 3, 2005—18 years after the quadruple rape—that a breakthrough occurred. Following a rape at AER College dorm, Hansen left a condom at the scene. DNA analysis finally connected this evidence to both the 1990 murder and, eventually, older cases. Yet this connection took another five years to act upon.
The 2010 DNA match from the condom was the turning point that should have been reached a decade earlier. Stored evidence from 1995 sat in police facilities for 15 years before finally being analyzed and compared to Hansen's profile.
## A Killer's Arrogance: The Prison Letters Conspiracy
Hansen's conviction did not end his attempts to obstruct justice. From behind bars, he orchestrated a chilling scheme: he sent eight letters to his elder son containing semen, saliva, and hair samples sealed in rubber nappies. His instructions were explicit—assault a woman, incapacitate her (but not kill), plant Hansen's DNA at the scene, and frame another individual with matching DNA to invalidate his sentence.
The plot revealed a criminal mind still working to exploit weaknesses in forensic procedure and the justice system.
## Geographic Profile: A Pattern Ignored
Academic analysis of the Amager Man case using Circle Theory of Environmental Range showed that nearly all crimes occurred on Amager island, connected to Hansen's daily routines and movements. This geographic clustering was identifiable and could have narrowed the suspect pool had profiling techniques been deployed more aggressively during the 1990s.
## Systemic Failure
The Amager Man case represents a cascade of procedural failures: delayed DNA analysis, inadequate case linkage protocols, evidence storage that didn't facilitate comparative analysis, and investigative timelines that allowed a serial predator to operate with near-impunity for over two decades.
Hansen's conviction was definitive, but the question remains: how many victims might have been spared had Denmark's justice system connected the evidence faster?
