However, capital offenses and certain serious crimes have no time limitation, meaning these cases can theoretically remain open and prosecutable indefinitely.
Modern forensic advances, particularly DNA analysis and digital forensics, have enabled law enforcement to revisit cold cases and potentially solve crimes that remained unresolved for decades. Many jurisdictions maintain dedicated cold case units that systematically review unsolved cases, applying contemporary investigative methods to historical evidence.
